Oudtshoorn, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of the Western Cape Province of South Africa, catches the eyes of the whole world with its breathtakingly majestic mountains, vast natural veld, and rich wildlife resources. As the largest town in the Little Karoo region, Oudtshoorn enjoys a reputation for its ostrich farming industry with the breeding volume ranking the second place worldwide. However, the contradiction between local power supply and demand is prominent. Problems such as frequent power shortages, aging power grid facilities, and peak-hour power rationing pose challenges and troubles to the normal operation of many local ostrich breeding and processing enterprises.

To solve this problem, TWS has joined hands with a local enterprise to launch a creative ecological model which integrates distributed PV-ESS and modern farming. In June 2024, TWS has succeeded in implementing the 3000kW/3727kWh energy storage project, which has been smoothly connected to the power grid. This offers stable and reliable green power support for the local ostrich farming and processing plants, facilitating the deep combination of green energy and modern agriculture.

The energy storage system (ESS) solution provided by TWS consists of two energy storage sub-systems. Each sub-system consists of five ProeM liquid-cooling energy storage cabinets (372kWh for each cabinet), a DC combiner, and a 1500kW PCS. The ESS features efficient and flexible operation, safe and reliable performance, convenient installation, as well as smart and user-friendly experience. It can realize highly efficient storage, adjustment, and release of energy.

Equipped with advanced liquid-cooling energy storage technology and intelligent environmental control system, it can effectively alleviate the impact of high temperature and high humidity on the performance of the ESS equipment, which ensures the steady operation of the ESS under harsh conditions. Customized functions such as black-start, on-grid operation, and off-grid operation offer the loads with power in time to ensure normal equipment operation in case of power grid blackout or failure.

Based on PV-ESS collaboration, this ESS solution adopts the strategy of discharging during morning and evening peak hours. On the one hand, it provides stable power supply, especially for important loads, to ensure continuous business operation and boost economic efficiency. On the other, it decreases the carbon emissions of the region by approximately 3510 tons per year. This promotes local consumption and utilization of renewable energy, thus contributing to the low-carbon energy transition and sustainable development of the local modern agriculture.

Oudtshoorn is just a microcosm of South Africa. South Africa has an abundance of mineral resources, agricultural resources, solar and wind energy resources, while it is faced with power supply shortages, which calls for the energy revolution and energy project fulfillment. This presents both opportunities and challenges to this land.

TWS has teamed up with the local enterprise to introduce green energy technology into the modern farming system. By exploring the creative concept of “distributed PV-ESS and modern farming”, TWS has demonstrated successful global application practices.

In the future, TWS will continue its efforts in exploring infinite possibilities with global partners in the renewable energy field. TWS aims to constantly bring green energy technology to more fields for better economic growth and facilitate the low-carbon and sustainable development for a greener future.
