UL9540A test standard is a test method proposed by Underwriter Laboratories Inc. (UL) to evaluate the large-scale thermal runaway fire spread of electrochemical ESS. It is widely recognized across North America and even the whole globe and becomes an iconic industry norm. The UL 9540A includes four levels of fire tests, beginning at the cell level and progressing to the module level, the unit (cabinet) level, and finally the installation level. Each test generates data to evaluate thermal runaway characteristics and fire propagation. The levels of testing are sequentially linked to each other, which makes the potential risk factors in the cycle life of the ESS clearer. In this way, the battery safety is verified in principle, thus ensuring the safety of the system.
